Sod Installation and Grass Seeding Services - Lafayette Indiana

Crew Cuts offers sod installation, providing homeowners with a lush, green lawn.

Sod has several advantages over seed including

  • Sod is virtually weed free
  • Sod is not susceptible to being washed away by rain or drainage problems
  • Sod provides instant gratification that requires little maintenance once the roots are established

Without the proper watering, the sod may not properly take root and perish. Sod needs proper water and nutrients to adjust to soil conditions in different areas. Many lawns in the Lafayette Indiana area are clay and it takes years for the root system to develop into the natural soil.

Please consult with a Crew Cuts Lawn Care expert to determine if installing sod in your yard is the best alternative.

Grass Seed or Hydroseeding

Crew Cuts also offers installation of grass through a slit seeding, also known as hydroseeding, process.
Hydroseeding, when the soil is loosened or proper dirt is installed, takes a bit longer to establish, but the long term appeal is one that all lawn enthusiasts crave.

When we hydroseed a lawn, we cut grooves into the soil and plant the seed.  Then, we cover the grass seed with a "slurry" of grass seed and mulch, which helps maintain the moisture level of the seed. The slurry also has other ingredients including fertilizer and tackifying agents.

Once the grass takes root, the overall appearance and upkeep is much easier to obtain.  Typically, starting a lawn by hydroseeding is considerably less expensive than laying sod.

Best Grass For Lafayette Indiana Lawns

Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass is by far the most popular species used in home lawns in northern Indiana, due to high quality appearance, hardiness, and recovery ability. Kentucky bluegrass requires moderate to high levels of maintenance (such as fertilizing, watering, etc.) to maintain high quality. Kentucky bluegrass prefers full sun, although a few cultivars have tolerance to light shade. Kentucky bluegrass is slow to establish by seed, and is also readily available as sod.

Fine Fescue

Leaf width is narrow, and most are bunch-type grasses (red fescue has rhizomes). Wear tolerance (such as foot traffic) and recovery ability of fine fescues is fair. Maintenance levels are generally low, especially fertilizer needs, and fine fescues may decline in full sun when mowed frequently.

Perennial Ryegrass

They tend to be disease prone and offer poor freezing tolerance if flooded or exposed to wind. Perennial ryegrasses is designed for full sun areas, but will tolerate some shade. Ryegrass is bred to give a pleasing dark green color, with a fine texture and excellent mowing qualities. Is also a very good choice for blends with Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue.

Tall Fescue

While they take a little while to establish or recuperate since they are a clump-type grass, they are extremely wear resistant, drought, heat, and salt-tolerant; and moderately shade tolerant. Tall fescues have few disease problems and require less maintenance that other grasses. Kentucky bluegrass is the first grass to brown out in the summer and tall fescue is the last.
